A Nanny is responsible mainly for the care of the children of the family and the care of their equipment – their clothes and so on – and for any housework that has directly to do with them.She will, for example, do the children’s laundry and mending, and clean their rooms. In some cases she may also need to do the cooking for the children and for herself. In some very rich households it may be that, as well as the nanny who has main responsibility for the children, there will also be a nursery maid who will deal with the domestic side of the work. However, this sort of establishment is rather unusual these days. It was common in Victorian times but there are few families who can afford to maintain this size of household.

In some cases a nanny will have a room of her own. However, very often she will be expected to share the same bedroom with the children. Certainly she will be expected always to be within earshot of the children during the night. If one of the children awakes and needs attention it will be nanny’s job to leave her own bed and attend to him.

Her day will follow the pattern of an ordinary mother’s day. That is, she will get up before the children, get them up, wash them, dress them, and provide their breakfast, and see the older ones off to school. During the course of the morning she will supervise the younger children’s play while dealing with the cleaning of their room and their laundry, and so on. She will probably be expected to take them for a walk in the morning and after supervising their lunch spend her afternoon playing with them and keeping them happy. Again, like an ordinary mother, she will bath the children and put them to bed at the end of the day. She will be expected throughout to teach and train her charges properly. Her employers will probably expect their children to be well-mannered, toilet-trained, and so on.

Ideally she should have a full day off per week as well as a certain number of free evenings – two or three free evenings would be a reasonable amount. However, a Nanny must be prepared to have her scheduled free time altered at short notice because of family demands. A thoughtful employer will do this very rarely if at all. Unfortunately, not all employers are thoughtful and many indeed treat a Nanny unfairly, changing her off-duty periods without notice or taking away her free time altogether.

Also, some employers may expect a Nanny to do tasks that are not really part of the care for the children. For example, she may be asked to wash up the dishes after the meals taken by the adults in the family, or deal with ordinary housework.

It is necessary then for a Nanny to have a clear understanding with her employer, before she accepts a post, of what her job will be and what tasks will be expected of her, and, of course, what free time she will have. If a Nanny takes a post without getting these matters straight first and later finds that she is exploited, she has, frankly, only herself to blame. A clear understanding of the nanny’s role made in advance will be of great help to her if she is to be happy in her work.

The days of getting a nanny to do full-scale house-cleaning and mind three small children and two dogs, all at minimum wage, are past.

“The family that wants that kind of help at that kind of wage is looking for a slave,” says Lissa Reimer, owner of Village Nannies, a nanny placement agency. What does nanny do? Child care is her top priority, followed by light housekeeping and meal preparation.

“Cooking for the children is one of the nanny’s duties,” says Reimer, “so often a nanny will fall into cooking for the whole family because it’s no more work to cook for the parents. A lot of nannies will do baking with the children, because that’s an activity kids enjoy.”

Nanny duties shift with the needs of the family. Small children require more hands-on care, so families should expect less housework from her. Older children require chauffeuring, schedule-juggling and homework supervision.

When it comes to all-out housework — scrubbing toilets, polishing hardwood floors and cleaning the oven — Sharon Foerster, mother of two children under seven years of age and employer of a live-in nanny, says, “You need to call a maid service. My nanny’s priority is with the kids, not how clean my house is.”

The Nanny Network, LLC helps families find nannies to meet their needs, and we recruit, screen, and refer nannies for positions that match their qualifications. Countless families have utilized our services to find nannies, and the number of nannies that return to us after their jobs end for new opportunities speaks to our successful track record in pairing nannies and families together.

We place:

* Full-time live-out
* Part-time live-out
* Temporary (including newborn specialists) – available from one day to three months or more
* Group child care (for special events, weddings, conferences, etc.)
* Mommy Nanny (care givers paid 20% less on average since bring their own child to work)
* Shared Care (involving one nanny and two families)

For families beginning their nanny search, we suggest planning for the search to take approximately 3 to 6 weeks (except for temporary which usually take less time).

Hiring the right nanny can solve this problem for you. You will be spending as much time as you can afford, either towards the end of the day or the start of day, with your kids but during the rest of time you can be rest assured that they are well taken care of when you know that they are in caring hands of a nanny. Since this concerns your kids you should be highly careful while choosing a nanny.

Starting from getting you a list of nannies to choose from to performing a through background check on the references and credentials of the nanny you choose, all this is taken care of by the agency itself. Good nanny agencies perform a complete scrutiny, along with checking the police records, to ensure there are no glitches in the background of the person being selected as the nanny. A history of alcohol abuse, drug abuse, petty thefts are serious concerns for anyone hiring a nanny. Usually the nanny agencies perform all the background checks even before getting the nanny aboard their agency. You might have to pay a little extra to a renowned agency but the money you pay would guarantee you peace of mind.

Personally Interview The Nanny is important to conduct a personal interview of any nanny you are planning to hire. It makes sense to conduct the interview in the presence of your kids and any relative that you can get hold. If after the interview everyone feels positive about the nanny then its ok to hire the person, if there is any doubt or uneasiness in the minds of anyone then it is better not to hire the nanny. Human nature works on the basis of instinct, people have instinct to guide them when they are not completely sure of all the facts. Believe your instinct completely and also the instinct of your close ones before selecting the nanny. Some who has a great background record does not necessarily qualify as a good nanny.

You can monitor the nanny performance on the basis of feedback given by your kids mainly; you can also get feedback from people who get to see the nanny’s behavior when you are not around like say your gardener, your cook, your maid or your neighbors. If the feedback stays negative over a week’s time you should consider replacing the nanny. Don’t come to any hasty conclusion unless it is a serious complaint; give the nanny at least a week before taking your decision. If there are any serious complaints against her by your kids and your nanny is not able to provide a convincing explanation for the same then consider firing her immediately.

A nanny is someone who is employed by a family either on a live-in or live-out basis, who is essentially responsible for taking care of the children and their needs. It is generally observed that women excel in the role of a nanny as they are very patient, kind and have an eye for detail.

A nanny’s responsibilities include everything to do with children that can extend to household chores and all tasks related to the children. If you are a mother and have children of your own, you would probably make a good nanny even without any training. However, if you are not a mother you may want to go in for formal training to execute these tasks efficiently. There is a great demand for nannies, so you can make a lucrative career. In the fast-paced life where both parents go to work, they look for nannies, child care professionals and housekeepers to help them out even at a high cost. Working as a nanny in a household needs a lot of time and investment as any regular job. In fact, a nanny plays an important role in the psychological development of a child and her contribution is very significant showing positive results in the form of well-rounded individuals with a sense of well-being, security and family bonding.
